Reykjavik

Use your leisure time in Reykjavik to discover the unique charm of the world’s northernmost capital or book one ouf our pre-programs. Stykkisholmur

Stykkisholmur is the starting point of our adventures on the Snaefellnes Peninsula. Often called “Iceland in Miniature” because of its it diverse landscapes, the area is home to bird-rich Breidafjördur Bay and Snaefellsjökull glacier, which sits atop a 700,000-year-old dormant volcano that was featured in the Jules Verne novel Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Due to its diversity of landscapes and places of national interests, Snaefellsnes Peninsula is often called “Iceland in miniature”. This excursion includes views on the Snaefellsjökull Glacier, the dramatic rock formations of Snaefellsnes as well as the Londrangar Rock pinnacles, which are remnants of a large volcanic crater. En route you also visit the small fishing village of Arnarstapi and the Shark Museum in Bjarnarhöfn.

By Snowcat your experienced guide takes you up to 4,600 feet (1,400 m) on Snaefellsjökull Glacier! In good weather you can enjoy a fantastic view over Hellissandur and Breidafjördur Bay. On especially clear days you can even spot the far-off Westfjords. The famous novelist Jules Verne once chose Snaefelljokull Glacier as entrance on his “Journey to the center of the Earth”.

Isafjördur

Today‘s destination is Isafjördur, an idyllic town in the Westfjords region. This secluded peninsula is connected to the Icelandic mainland by only a narrow strip of land and includes many roadless areas where cars have never been. The landscape includes jaw-dropping views of dramatic fjords carved by ancient glaciers, sheer table mountains that plunge into the sea and pristine North Atlantic vegetation.

The waters along the Westfjords are extremely rich in marine life due to special current conditions and sustainable fisheries policy. This sea angling tour allows you to benefit from these factors to catch cod, haddock and halibut of stately size. The boat trip starts in either Sudureyri or Flateyri fishing village, 25 min drive from Ísafjördur, and takes you out to a sandbank off the coast.

Enjoy a short trip to Vigur. This serene little island, which boasts only five inhabitants, is a perfect location to observe an array of birds in their natural surroundings including puffins, eider ducks, arctic terns and black guillemot. While on the island, you can also visit Iceland‘s only extant windmill which dates from the 19th century. The boat tour takes about 35 minutes each way.

This tour leads to Iceland’s most sparsely populated areas. On this daytrip you will explore the Westfjords, a historic village and a magnificent waterfall. With a population of about 260 inhabitants Thingeyri is both the area‘s first trading post and one of the oldest settlements. At the end we stop at the thunderous Dynjandi, the highest and most impressive waterfall in the Westfjord region.

Siglufjördur

By morning we reach the fjord town of Siglufjordur, once the hub of the global herring industry and now enjoying a rebirth in popularity. Learn about the golden age of herring at the award-winning Herring Era Museum located on the vibrant harbor-front. Later we set sail for Akureyri, Iceland’s lovable second largest city. If weather conditions allow, we visit Hrísey, the second largest island of Iceland. With only 153 inhabitants, the island is located in Eyjafjörður, about 35 kilometers north of Akureyri.

Dive into the golden age of the herring boom at the award-winning Herring Museum. The museum‘s five exhibits illustrate the history of the industry, the processing of the herring into meal and oil, a fish freezing plant, and a waterfront dock area where visitors can stroll past 11 different fishing vessels on display. A life herring salting demonstration with traditional songs and dances is during the summer performed by a local theater group, where the spirit of old herring plants is revived. The golden age of the herring fishery play an important role in the history of the Icelandic equal right movement. Women got more opportunities to work outside of home, side by side with men on equal basis.

Akureyri

Ranging inland from Akureyri, we visit the fascinating Lake Myvatn region, where the schizophrenic landscape looks as if “heaven and hell” have clashed. One side of the lake features rugged volcanic remnants, while the other side is blessed with lush vegetation and varied bird life. Summer shore excursion options include a journey to Askja volcano via Super Jeep.

Enjoy one of the most beautiful spots in northern Iceland. Lake Myvatn area teems with fauna. The tour starts with a stop at the spectacular Godafoss waterfall and continues to the small settlement of Skutustadagígar. We stop also at the impressive lava formations of Dimmuborgir, said to resemble a collapsed citadel. In Icelandic folklore Dimmuborgir is said to connect the earth to the infernal regions. Towards the end of the tour we visit the Myvatn Nature Baths for a relaxing geothermal bath. Look forward to an amazing journey through an area of extreme contrasts.

A number of Iceland’s highlights are included in this excursion. The horseshoe shaped depression Asbyrgi Canyon, said to be the meeting place of the pagan gods. The Jökulsargljufur Glacial Canyon and also the echoing cliffs Hljodaklettar and the Dettifoss Waterfall, Europe‘s most powerful waterfall. The tour also takes you to the Lake Myvatn area with its large population of waterfowl.

Husavik

In the early morning hours we steam into Skjalfandi Bay and Húsavík. Often called the “Whale watching capital” of Iceland, the town’s offshore waters are home to 15 different whale species, as well as dolphins and 30 variety of bird. Watching these graceful ocean giants in their Arctic habitat is an unforgettable experience.

Ásbyrgi is one of the wonders of nature, a wide, horseshoe-shaped canyon with sheer cliff faces up to 0,06 miles high. It is 21,7 miles long and over 0,62 miles. A distinctive rock formation rises up from the center of Ásbyrgi, up to 0,16 mile wide, known as Eyjan(the Island) which we will hike up. From Eyjan we will have a beautiful view over the canyon and the black sands in the north. Same drive back to ship.

Get off the beaten track in a Super Jeep and visit hidden treasures in North Iceland. This is a 7 hour Super Jeep adventure that takes you to lesser travelled trails in the vicinity of Húsavík. The goal of this tour is to visit interesting and remote destinations, accessible by 4x4. Enjoy beautiful views, landscapes and stories of the people of the land in the good company of our local guide. Each day we pick a destination according to weather and road conditions to make the most out of the experience.

Seydisfjördur

Iceland’s East Fjords are best explored from the impossibly picturesque port of Seydisfjördur, nestled between the sea and steep mountains. Activities include seal spotting, horseback riding, kayaking and guided hikes of the Vestadalur area.

The history of the Icelandic horse reaches back to the 9th and 10th centuries. This small sized horse is considered to be intelligent, gut tempered and versatile. The farm Husey is located between two glacial rivers, 37 miles north of Egilsstadir. This two hour horseback tour offers a wonderful way to appreciate the beauty of the coast and nearby mountains as well as endless opportunities for spotting birds and seals.

This tour is a unique opportunity to visit one of Iceland’s most remote places that even few Icelanders have witnessed. The tour begins with a drive to Thorarinsstadir archaeological site where we’ll take a look at an interesting Viking era excavation site. From there the tour continues along the fjord surrounded by high mountains. The nature and heritage center of Skalanes covers 1250 hectares. The center aims to create a site where Icelandic environment and cultural history can be researched and interpreted whilst maintaining a model for sustainable tourism. The area is a habitat for approx. 50 different bird species during the summer time. Also Eider ducks nest a colony on site. A 45 minutes hike will be carried out to the 640 m high sea cliffs. Before heading back to the town of Seydisfjordur we’ll enjoy some local refreshments at Skalanes House. In Seydisfjordur, we plan a 30 minutes visit to the Technological museum.

Narrow fjords, jagged mountain peaks, remote farms and small fishing villages are some of East Iceland’s characteristics. This coach tour takes you from Seydisfjordur to the inland and via the mountain road Breiddalsheidi further to Stodvarfjordur. There we‘ll visit Petra‘s impressive Stone and Mineral Collection. Walk through her remarkable garden with amazing stones collected by Petra throughout her life. From Stödvarfjordur we head to Reydarfjordur and visit the Wartime Museum.
The museum is located by the barracks that were a part of a big hospital camp and shows Icelandic life in the 1940's, the high point of the World War II. The museum's exhibitions give a full account of days gone by, both from the perspective of the soldiers as well as the habitants of Reydarfjördur village.

Djupivogur

Today’s port of call is Djupivogur fishing village in southeast Iceland, starting point for an optional excursion to Vatnajökull glacier.

This tour from Djupivogur takes you to the magnificent Glacier Lagoon of Jökulsarlon. Huge blocks of ice constantly break off the glacier, Breidamerkurjökull, and large icebergs float on the lagoon. The lagoon is not very wide but it is up to 750 feet deep which makes it the deepest lake in Iceland. Breidamerkurjökull is an outlet of the Vatnajökull glacier. Sail among the huge icebergs in the picturesque scenery of Jökulsarlon with a specially equipped boat.

D2 – VATNAJOKULL GLACIER – SNOWMOBILE USD 395 P.P.

Coach tour from Djupivogur before a specially equipped 4x4 vehicle will take you up to Vatnajökull - Europe‘s largest glacier. The peak offers stunning views over glacier, mountain valleys and the Ocean. Several film sequences have been shot on this glacier including the opening sequence in James Bond movie “A View to a Kill”. In 2011, it was used as a location for the hugely popular HBO series Game of Thrones. The tour includes a lunch at the lobster restaurant Humarhöfnin in Höfn.

Enjoy a Super Jeep drive from Djupivogur towards Illikambur/Evelridge in Lonsöraefi close to Europe’s biggest glacier. From Illikambur it is a 2 hour walk to Mulaskali and back to the Jeep. On the Jeep tour we will cross glacier rivers and drive through spectacular mountain sceneries.

Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands)

Located off Iceland’s south coast, the Westman Islands were formed by submarine volcanic eruptions around 10,000 years ago. Surtsey Island emerged from the sea in 1963 and is one the youngest land masses on earth. We go ashore on Heimaey, the only inhabited island, where half-buried houses remain from a violent 1973 eruption. During the shore landing there is time for bird watching and you might even spot whales.

Reykjavik

After breakfast we bid farewell to the OCEAN DIAMOND as we sail back into Reykjavik. Explore inland areas like the Golden Circle and its famous Gullfoss waterfall via our Air & Ground package or other post-cruise programs. Or simply hang out in Reykjavik, a perfect city for those who want to refresh their spirit in a place that combines invigorating outdoor activities, great food and world-class entertainment.
